Smells Like Team Spirit... 23/04/2009

It’s been a while since my last blog as things haven’t run smoothly in the top flight. We have been doled out hammerings on a weekly basis until last week when the opposition dropped out and we were awarded the 3 points.

So we’re off the mark anyway. In fact it moved us out of the relegation places. Christ I don’t want to stay up! I guess that means I am being under ambitious maybe?

Anyway, to add to our start we had Jason drop out a few hours before kick off due to a bad back. This time, instead of Ty, Matty volunteered. Although I did say I would give it a go. I am glad I didn’t though as Matty pulled off some amazing saves to really keep us in the game.

We were up against Badgers in a Bin. We played them way back in our 2nd season at Goals, when we were both in Division 2. They were promoted that season and we were relegated. On both occasions we were whipped 12-5 and 11-3. So the omens weren’t good.

To be fair though we have come along way since then and improved as a team, but this season has been hard and so we knew it would be a stern test. I mean these guys were joint top going into the game having not lost as yet.

We finally showed that we were no pushovers though and the team spirit that was so evidently missing previous weeks came back suddenly.

From the off we pressed them and stretched them. Our defence was ragged at times, but effective and the times they broke through Matty was on hand to pull off save after save. Now I am not saying we out played them or out classed them or even stopped them breaking us down, what I am saying is that we created as many chances as they did. This was reflected at half time where we held a slender 4-3 advantage.

The goals were either sublime or cheeky in equal measure. My goal was a neat finish into the far corner, Ty’s was a pile driver of a shot, Dave’s was all about his speed to the ball and Gaz’s was a toe poke on the edge of the area when they were complaining about a handball. Play to the whistle children, always play to the whistle!

They were getting frustrated as they expected an easy win and started hacking at us whenever the opportunity arose. It did lead to tempers flared, especially from me, but no real retaliation. Even when Dave was on the end of a cheeky elbow we didn’t react.

The heat was a factor in the second half. Don’t get me wrong I love playing in the sun, but the heat baring down on the unfit really makes it harder. I couldn’t get my breathe for long periods of the game. In the second half many of our lot were flagging.

They eventually took the lead but we didn’t go down without a fight. Richard robbed their man of the ball and lashed in a goal. He followed that up with a brilliant first time shot that was goal bound, but a block prevented it from reaching its target.

Ty hit another belter from out wide on the angle and I had a few chances to add to my tally dragging a few shots wide.

We had the final say on the goal front though. Matty rolled it out to me and as I was been closed down by their ginger number 11 I switched it out wide to Gaz. I lost my marker and Gaz saw the run putting the ball perfectly in my path for me to belt home my second.

Another 5 more minutes and it may have been a different outcome though. We just ran out of steam and then out of time. The final score line was 10-7 to the Badgers who went top and are the only unbeaten team left in the league after Polska lost.

However, we played really well. It was easily our best performance of the season so far by a country mile. We may have lost but we won a personal battle with our confidence. Our heads were held high and the opposition knew they were in a game.

Next week it is the Fatsuma’s. The other team that came up with us this season. It would be nice to get a win to go with the performance.

We need to start believing again and keep the spirit alive.
