Set-up your outfield players in a 3-1 “T” formation. The opposition keeper has possession of the ball and passes to the defender. When the keeper gains possession of the ball, this should trigger the defensive positioning and movement of the striker, the two midfield players and the defender. Have the striker at the base of the “T”, with the two midfield players either side of the defender.
-
The striker must pressure on the ball and stays in a deep position which should keep the opposition defender occupied and will offer your team an outlet if you win possession. The two midfield players and the defender must stay alert, marking tightly and are ready to close down any potential movement from the opposition. The key to success here is not to let the receiving player turn with the ball towards your goal. If the opposition player manages to turn in a wide area, show them the line/boards. Alternatively if the opposition player manages to turn in a central area, try to keep them off their preferred foot. In both situations stay tight and try to get a foot to the ball at the earliest opportunity.
-
Should your team win possession of the ball in this situation, this formation will allow for a quick transition into the 1-2-1 attacking formation (as outlined in On the attack: 5-a-side).
